Hello everyone – happy hump day, or whatever the kids say these days. Anyhow I’m back today with the newest purchase to join the Gazfunk vinyl shelves. This is one of my favourite soul 45s ever – and I hope you’ll enjoy it just as much as I do!
I haven’t given myself a particularly easy record to write about given that it is the only single (that I know of) put out by this duo. In fact, I don’t think either of them released any other records at all – but maybe someone out there will correct me. After some digging I found that J.B. Ledbetter was involved in 3 other 45s as either writer or producer, and one of those was a b-side. So I think you could say this one is pretty obscure.
Released on the Verve label in 1968, Show Some Sign is one of those classic soul tunes where the man sings a verse, then the lady sings a verse and towards the end they join in together. The big thing I like about this is the horns arrangement – it’s nothing unique, but it just feels done really well and matches the pace of the tune perfectly. This is definitely one you can dance to if the mood takes you.
