Happy Sunday to you all! I hope you are keeping well. I’m back from a short break over the Easter period but not feeling very refreshed. However, since it’s been a while since my last update, I thought I’d push on through the tiredness to bring you today’s funky piece of wax.
Most of what I tend to feature here are tracks with a funk/soul vibe – but we’re taking a little break from that to showcase this fantastic slice of funky mod jazz. I’m sure some of you already know of the Yong Holt Trio (or indeed Young Holt Unlimited). They were the backing band for many a release on the iconic Brunswick label and are probably best known for Soulful Strut (the instrumental version of Barbara Acklin’s “Am I The Same Girl?”) Additionally, those of you of a mod persuasion will probably remember the classic “Wack, Wack” which filled many a dancefloor over the years.
What I feature for you today is actually the B-side to their take on Donovan’s classic “Mellow Yellow” Released in 1967 “Ain’t There Something Money Can’t Buy?” has that cool vibe to it and is more uptempo than the A-Side. Some of you hip-hop heads may well recognise this as being sampled in the Upbeat Mix of Gang Starr’s “Love Sick” In my opinion this is a perfect vibe for a chilled out Sunday afternoon.
Before I go, I just want to mention about a new club night that I will be starting in a few weeks. Do Your Thing! will launch on Saturday 9 May in the Sunflower Bar, Union Street, Belfast. I’ll be spinning an all-vinyl set from my huge collection and will be primarily focused on funk, soul, r&b, latin and funky jazz. Doors are 9pm and entry is free.
