When thinking of what track is was going to bring you next I became aware of the passing of the legendary Eddie Palmieri. Palmieri (in case you don’t know or haven’t heard of him) is a legend in the latin music scene. Many of his peers referred to him as “El Maestro” such was his musical proficiency.
Palmieri’s musical journey began in 1950 when at the age of 13 he joined his uncle’s band playing timbales. Through the years he became best known for his piano playing but as a bandleader could turn his hands to many other instruments. This led to him playing many different styles of music from latin jazz, salsa, funk and on to house. Always moving forward, always innovating.
The record I have chosen for you today was from his time with Harlem River Drive – a band also featuring his brother Charlie. Harlem River Drive fused elements of rock, latin, funk and jazz to create a unique sound at the time. Think of someone like War and you get the picture. Seeds of Life is my favourite of their 3 45s with some great percussion
(unsurprising given the presence of the mighty Bernard “Pretty” Purdie”)
