Jimmy Mayes And The Mill Street Depot – Monkey Shine

Delighted to finally be able to bring you today’s piece of funky wax. I only just bought this 45 in the last couple of weeks as it has been on my wantslist for a looong time and therefore is very much in the “rare” camp.

Jimmy Mayes was a drummer from the Chicago area and released a few 45s on various labels. I think this one was released in ’69 (though not certain) on a tiny record label outta Florida (maybe the only release on the label??)

So what you got in store here? Well like many funk/soul tunes of the time, “The Monkey Shine” is based around a “new” dance. In fact, listening back to the tune as I type this, he clearly references 1969 in the track as mentioned earlier. This is a furious instrumental heavily influenced by James Brown (wasn’t everyone?). There’s breaks aplenty here as well and one that will hopefully tear up the dancefloor when I get round to playing it out!

Enjoy. Gaz
