The Gaturs – Gator Bait

We’re returning to the Crescent City for this week’s slice of funky wax and what a tune this is!! I first heard this track many years ago when it featured on the seminal “New Orleans Funk” compilation and instantly fell in love. Over the years I made it a goal to track down as many of the original 45s as I could and to date I think I am missing 3 45s.

Today’s selection is one of my absolute faves from the LP though. It just screams cool and funky and sums up the whole vibe of the Deep Funk scene. I probably heard it once or twice when I used to travel to London to watch Keb Darge (and later Snowboy) at the legendary Madame Jo-Jo’s. The feeling of entering a seedy Soho club with this being the soundtrack was something to behold!

These days (like many things!) the price of this 45 has gone up quite significantly. A decent copy will set you back £300+. Luckily I got my copy at a cheaper price as I can’t really afford to pay that anymore. If you haven’t heard this one before, I hope you dig it just as much as I do.
