We’re back this week with the 2nd installment of our guest contributor section – but before we introduce this month’s soul brutha I’d just like to add a big thanks to Larry Grogan for being our inaugural guest.
So Dave (or HeavySoulBrutha to his friends) is a record digger/collector from Virginia, USA. His main interests are soul, funk and jazz but in truth he digs all genres of music. He often writes about his new musical discoveries through his site – www.HeavySoulBrutha.com and shares these finds at his Mixcloud page www.mixclod.com/HeavySoulBrutha So over to the man himself:
SoulSistas And SoulBruthas! First off, big thanks to Gary for inviting me over to share one of my favourite records with you. I chose this Lavell Hardy record because it’s one I’ve had for about a year now and it always seems to find it’s way back to my record player and played mighty loud. Got turned on to it by one of London’s premier record diggers, Chris Archbold. I still remember the blown away feeling I got when ‘Don’t Lose Your Groove’ found it’s way into my ears. And I can’t tell how great it was to find myself a copy.
Cut in 1967 and released on the Rojac label, the tune is a major blast of FUNK. It’s got some snapping drums, with a great little drum break in the middle, some powerful horns and Lavell’s vocals are rare as f**k. It really is one of the baddest records you’ll ever run across. The flip “Women Of The World” is just a bit slower but with the same energy. The tune talks about women sometimes treating a Brutha wrong, but damn, you just can’t stop loving them!
So, I hope you get down to this one as much as I do. If you run across it out there, grab it without hesitation!
Peace and SOUL…. HSB Dave B
