Gazfunk Espana

I mentioned in my latest update about my trip to Spain recently, well I’ve uploaded some photos for you to have a look at from my guest dj spots in Madrid.

My first gig was in the Berlin Jazz Cafe in a street just off Sol Square in central Madrid on the Wednesday night. It was in a venue upstairs with a small(ish) capacity that had that cool jazz club vibe. The first part of the night (which didn’t start until round 1pm!!) featured my host and resident Spanish groover, DJ Bop Gun spinning some funky instros which the very talented Alana Sinkey of Cosmosoul provided the vocals over the top. The crowd there seemed to really dig the groove they were laying down – I must say I really enjoyed it myself.

Shortly after it was my turn on the decks which I shared duties with Dj Frankinter – another of Madrid’s top funky dj’s. The crowd really got their groove on and in typical Madrid style, the venue didn’t close until 5.30 am!!

After a day’s rest, Friday night took me to the Lavapies area of Madrid – a bohemian, cosmopolitan, residential area a little outside the centre to a cool bar called La Huelga. The bar was adorned with various soul/funk/mod images including, a Stax Logo, a Northern Soul fist and a picture of a cute girl on a scooter.

As the bar was in a more residential area, the music had to be lower (shame!) and closing time was 3.30am. After Dj Bop Gun kicked things off on the decks around 11.30 the crowd started to build slowly but surely. By the time it was my turn to spin a few, the bar was completely packed out. The crowd really enjoyed the music – so much so that they were hassling the owner to stay open later!!

Suffice to say I had a great time in Madrid and the locals really appreciate their funk. If you ever visit the city, be sure to drop by La Huelga and tell Mr Bopgun Gazfunk says hello!
