Peggy Lee – Sittin' On The Dock Of The Bay

I’d pretty much settled on what track I was going to bring you this week, that was until I heard late on Friday of the untimely death of Adam Yauch (aka MCA from the Beastie Boys) at the tragically young age of 47 after a 3 year battle with cancer.

I’m sure pretty much all of our readers are well aware of the Beasties and no doubt some of you were fans (as I am). The Beastie Boys alongside Run DMC were probably the first rap stars to gain a cult following in the UK. Originally starting out as a punk band, the sound evolved into hip-hop and they even recorded an instrumental funk album entitled “The In Sound From Way Out” in 1996 which showed that they weren’t just rappers, they were talented musicians in their own right.

It seemed only right then that this week’s update is a nod to Yauch and his Beastie Boys. The track we’ve selected today is the inspiration behind one of The Beastie’s biggest hits of recent years – 2004’s “Ch-Check It Out”.

R.I.P. Adam & God Rest Your Soul – your influence on hip-hop music can never be underestimated.
