Over the last week I’ve been pondering what track to bring you in my latest update. We’ve covered various styles over the year but given that funk is quite a broad church (which is entirely appropriate given today’s pick) I’ve decided to go with a nice little gospel track.
Most of you are probably aware of Mr Hathaway though hopefully that’s more to do with tracks like “The Ghetto” and “Put Your Hand In The Hand” rather than anything he cut with Roberta Flack.
Anyway, this song was originally released in 1970 by Dorsey Brunette and has been covered on numerous occasions by various other artists, but it’s this version released in ’71 that’s my personal favourite. From the opening marching band drums, the song builds and builds complete with fantastic gospel choir backing vocals to a joyous crescendo.
Praise the lord!
